Resume Clarity: Standing Out in a Competitive Job Market

Some time ago, I embarked on a journey, living in three different countries from scratch. Back then, social media wasn’t as prevalent, and job portals, though introducing openings, made receiving responses almost impossible. This struggle, often referred to as ghosting (read more here), remains a prevalent issue. What baffled me was the absence of a solution to make starting in a new job market much easier.

As I contemplated moving to the East with my daughter to explore more opportunities, network, and enhance my know-how by learning from experts, I faced an array of challenges as a single mother:
- finding the right accommodation that wouldn’t break the bank but would be close to a co-working space and a preschool for my daughter.
- identifying a co-working centre with companies from my field.
- locating an affordable preschool that accepted foreigners and operated until 5 pm, giving me the space to work.
This was six to seven years ago when finding such consolidated information in one place seemed impossible. Unfortunately, not much has changed in the market.
It has been very similar with the job market. Luckily, there are some tips that can help you rise above the crowd.

Facts to Bear in Mind When Crafting a Resume
Recruiters and TA (Talent Acquisition) Members Scan Your Resume Within Seconds:
- your resume receives only a brief glance.
- they look for keywords to determine resume action.
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) play a key role:
- keywords are vital as ATS sift through resumes, influencing their next course of action.

Significant Difference Between Resume and CV
Understanding the disparity between a resume and a CV is essential. Delve deeper into this distinction here.
Motivation Letter: A Valuable Companion to Your Resume
While some recruiters may not delve into it, a well-crafted motivation letter can be a game-changer. It serves as your ally, especially when a recruiter seeks assurance beyond the resume. Remember, your resume is your primary sales pitch, and the motivation letter complements it effectively.
While often used interchangeably, it’s crucial for job seekers to understand the distinction between a CV and a resume. For most professionals, the go-to document is the resume due to its relevance in the job application process.
1. Start with a great resume opener
“Dynamic Sales Professional with a proven track record of 10+ years, excelling in the technology sector. Expertise in driving revenue growth through strategic client acquisitions and cultivating lasting relationships. Successfully led a sales team to exceed targets, resulting in a 30% increase in annual revenue.”
To emphasise your most valuable achievements that align with the specific job specification you are applying for, the first sentences should grab the attention of a recruiter who is scanning your resume within a few seconds. Clearly articulating your career objectives, key achievements, and what makes you an ideal candidate is essential. Keep it concise yet impactful, providing a snapshot of your professional journey.
2. Know Your Unique Selling Points (USPs)
Commence by identifying your Unique Selling Points — the skills, experiences, and attributes that distinguish you. Understand what makes you valuable to employers and tailor your resume to highlight these key elements. Ensure that you accentuate your USPs, supporting them with a clear, easy-to-read design that captures the reader’s attention at the right place.
It’s a common practice to structure your resume in the following format:
- FULL NAME
- JOB TITLE
- CONTACTS
- REQUIREMENTS on work conditions (e.g., remote, contract, English environment)
CV OPENER/INTRO
EXPERIENCE — Start with the most recent one
- Position
- Company
- From MM/YY to MM/YY
- Summary of responsibilities
- Achievements
- Leadership experience
- Skills set
- Projects
Support your work experience with projects you are proud of, highlighting your personal contributions and position within the project team. If you’ve worked on many other projects besides your primary work, highlight them afterward.
PROJECTS / Personal, school projects that are relevant to support your career
- Project name
- Stack used
- Your position within the team and it's size
- Project achievements
- Your personal achievements within the project
VOLUNTEER
- Any volunteer job
EDUCATION
- From highest to lowest
- Support your education with thesis, certifications
Enhance the left side of the resume with additional here still important information, such as:
- Languages (avoid using dots, and use a more conventional way that is generally recognised, e.g., A1, B2, etc.)
- List of most important skills: technical, managerial, business
3. Tailor Your Resume for Each Application
This is very important, as companies are looking for the ideal candidate; you should highlight what makes you ideal. The process is there to double-check if you are really on the same page. But this will open the door.
Be aware! Never lie on your resume because this is going to be revealed during the interview process sooner or later. Instead of opening doors, you will not only close them immediately but heal them so thoroughly that they will never open again.
Avoid the one-size-fits-all approach. Tailor your resume for each job application by aligning it with the specific requirements of the role. Highlight relevant skills and experiences that directly address the needs of the prospective employer. This shows your commitment and makes your application more compelling.
4. Quantify Your Achievements
Use concrete numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements. Instead of stating you “increased sales,” specify by what percentage. Quantifying your impact adds credibility and gives potential employers a clear understanding of the tangible contributions you can make to their organisation.
5. Embrace a Clean and Readable Format
Presentation matters. Ensure your resume is clean, organised, and easy to read. Use a professional format with clear headings, bullet points, and a consistent font. A visually appealing resume is more likely to capture the attention of busy recruiters.

6. Showcase Continuous Learning
In a rapidly evolving job market, showcasing your commitment to continuous learning is vital. Highlight any certifications, workshops, or additional education you’ve undertaken to stay relevant in your field. This demonstrates your adaptability and enthusiasm for professional growth.
7. Leverage Keywords
Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes. Incorporate industry-specific keywords relevant to the job description to increase the chances of your resume getting noticed. Aligning with the language used in the job posting enhances your visibility.
8. Seek Feedback
Before sending out your resume, seek feedback from mentors, colleagues, or career advisors. Fresh perspectives can uncover areas for improvement and help you present the best version of yourself on paper.
9. Demonstrate Cultural Fit
In addition to showcasing your skills, convey your personality and values. Employers not only seek qualified candidates but also individuals who align with the company culture. Briefly mention your interests, volunteer work, or any relevant hobbies that reflect your character.
10. Keep It Honest
While standing out is crucial, integrity is equally important. Be truthful about your experiences and skills. Exaggeration or misinformation can have negative consequences in the long run. Authenticity builds trust with potential employers.
In a job market where first impressions matter more than ever, your resume serves as your introduction to prospective employers. By implementing these strategies, you’ll not only stand out but also increase your chances of securing that coveted position in today’s competitive landscape. Remember, clarity, customisation, and authenticity are your allies on the path to professional success.
